The ‘Degree Mela’ organized to distribute degrees to graduating students of Delhi University was canceled by the School of Open Learning on Saturday as a large number of students gathered at the venue.

Delhi University’s School of Open Learning on Monday issued an advisory to students asking them not to attend programs for which they have not registered, even as the degree distribution program here was canceled due to overcrowding.

The ‘Degree Mela’ organized to distribute degrees to graduating students of Delhi University was canceled by the School of Open Learning on Saturday even as a large number of students gathered at the venue.

It was alleged that the stampede took place as the students were arbitrarily denied entry to the venue and the program was canceled abruptly.

The advisory issued by Uma Shankar Pandey, Principal, School of Open Learning, states that all current and former students should not attend any event without prior registration.

When the students reach the designated place, they are expected to be disciplined and follow the instructions of the administration.

“All the students and their guardians have been informed by the principal that disciplinary action will be taken against those students who are found indulging in indecent behavior in SOL (School of Open Learning) or any other place,” the advisory said.

On June 3, many students who had not registered themselves for the degree distribution fair of the School of Open Learning arrived. It has been said in the advisory that a lot of trouble was faced due to unnecessary crowd.

Students’ body Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS) described the consultation as “another shameful attempt by the administration to not acknowledge and accept its mistake”.

Instead, the administration is again trying to save its neck by putting the blame of mismanagement on the students, it alleged.

“The shocking incident of stampede on June 3 which resulted in injuries to several students is not a single instance of mismanagement in SOL but has to be seen in a series of different failures by the administration.

It said, “Instead of rectifying its grave mistake, the administration is shamefully blaming the students for the stampede through the current consultation”.

The KYS demanded that the director and principal of the School of Open Learning be immediately removed from their posts, “not only responsible for the mismanagement that led to the stampede, but also for shamefully passing the blame onto the students to save their necks”. Swami to even try”.

Also, a written apology should be issued immediately for issuing such outrageous advice.
