A motorcyclist was shot and injured by a sub-inspector of police during a scuffle at a checkpoint in Punjab’s Derabassi, following which the officer was suspended on Tuesday.

Police said a group of people vandalized a police vehicle after the incident on Sunday.

A purported video of the incident surfaced on the internet showing a man manhandling a policeman, who then fires a bullet into the man’s leg.

The injured person, Hitesh Kumar (24), has been admitted to a hospital in Chandigarh, police said.

Condemning the police action in AAP-ruled Punjab, Delhi BJP leader Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga said that 2-3 policemen were present at the spot who could have controlled the situation, but one opted to open fire.

“At Derabassi, Punjab Police manhandled a woman and shot her husband when she protested. @ArvindKejriwal After coming to power, Punjab Police stopped treating citizens of Punjab as human beings If so many cops wanted, they could have caught the man but one of the cops decided to open fire.”

A police team patrolling the area stopped a couple riding a two-wheeler for checking. He said the woman had an argument with sub-inspector (SI) Balwinder Singh and called up some of her relatives, following which they got into an argument with the police.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Mohali) Vivek Sheel Soni on Tuesday ordered registration of an FIR against Singh and suspended him.

According to a police statement, “The development took place after the SI, who was conducting routine checks with the police team, shot a man, identified as Hitesh Kumar, on the legs of a man, after a scuffle with some people on the night of June 26. But shot.”

He said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted under the chairmanship of the Superintendent of Police Headquarters in Mohali to probe the incident and submit the report.
