DU to Hold PG Admissions via CUET From Next Year, Executive Council Passes Resolution

Delhi University (DU) Will conduct postgraduate admission through Common University Entrance Test (CUET) from next academic cycle. For this, the Executive Council passed a resolution on Thursday. Last month, the academic council of the university passed a resolution to change the admission pattern for postgraduate programmes.

Under the current system, 50 per cent admissions are made directly from students who have obtained a bachelor’s degree from the university on the basis of merit in their qualifying examinations.

The change in admission pattern of postgraduate programs was proposed by a 10-member committee constituted to suggest strategy for PG admissions from 2023-2024.

The remaining 50 per cent seats are currently filled on the basis of the rank of the candidates in the DU postgraduate entrance exam.

Council member Seema Das told PTI, “The executive council has approved the recommendation of PG admission for DU students through CUET with half the remaining seats under merit-based admission.”

The committee recommended that admission to all postgraduate courses be done through a single window mechanism, where a Common University Entrance Test (CUET-PG) would be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), as done for other Central Universities goes. With effect from the academic session 2023-24 for all categories seeking admission in the University.

Separate merit list will be prepared for candidates who have passed CUET-PG and candidates of other category who appeared in PG entrance test earlier. While preparing the merit list, priority will be given to the category wise of the candidates who appeared in the DU entrance exam.

“While preparing the merit list, the priority shall be defined as under: The preceding category of candidates seeking admission through the Post Graduate Entrance Examination shall comprise the first 50 per cent seats and shall include those candidates who qualify in this Common University Admission examination on the basis of his/her eligibility to appear in the examination under this category,” the committee had recommended.

The remaining 50 percent seats will be filled from the preceding category of candidates who wanted to take admission after obtaining a bachelor’s degree from Delhi University.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) had earlier this year introduced CUET for postgraduate courses as well.

A total of 66 universities including central, state and private universities had opted for CUET PG exam for admission. Delhi University was among the universities that have opted out of this entrance test and are taking admission in PG courses as per the existing procedures.
