DU teacher suspended for sexual harassment

An associate professor of Delhi University’s (DU) College of Vocational Studies has been suspended for alleged sexual harassment leveled against him by a female colleague.

DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh said that the university has suspended the accused teacher following the recommendation made on the basis of serious allegations of sexual harassment. He says that the matter will be investigated soon.

On one hand the Vice-Chancellor has confirmed the suspension of the accused professor, but the latter has said that he has not received any such suspension letter yet.

Many teachers of the college say that there are many cases of sexual harassment registered against the accused associate professor.

These teachers say that three women teachers have made these allegations, one from Ramjas College and two from College of Vocational Studies. The governing body of the college had constituted an internal complaints committee after cases of sexual harassment were registered. After the recommendation of the committee, now the accused professor has been suspended.

At the same time, the Scheduled Castes / Scheduled Tribes Welfare Committee of the Delhi Government has demanded from the state education The department will file an FIR under the Juvenile Justice Act against private schools refusing to take the entrance test for students belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS).

Vishesh Ravi, chairman of the SC / ST Welfare Committee, says that on the instructions of the committee, the education department had issued a show cause notice to private schools for refusing to take the entrance examination of EWS students.

Even after the issue of the notice, some private schools have not taken the entrance test for EWS students and have not given them free uniforms, books etc. Therefore, the committee has demanded the Delhi Education Department to register an FIR on receipt of complaints against such private schools. And take strict action against such schools which do not follow the guidelines set by the Delhi government.

A meeting of SC/ST Welfare Committee chaired by AAP MLA Ravi was held to discuss the admission of EWS students by private schools through Delhi Education Department, which were rejected and they were given free books, uniforms and Stationery not provided.

According to the Delhi government, parents of EWS students across Delhi have filed a complaint with the SC/ST Welfare Committee that their children are not getting admission under the EWS quota for free stationery.

The first meeting of the SC/ST Welfare Committee was held on 30th May and the chairman of the committee has directed the education department officials to ensure admission for all EWS-deprived group students whose names appear in the EWS list and this Also ensure that free stationery, books and uniforms are provided to all such students as per the norms required by the private schools.
