Drought, anti-Modi sloganeering: Odisha Assembly session begins on stormy note

The eight-day monsoon session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly began on a stormy note on Wednesday as the opposition Congress created a ruckus demanding a special debate on the situation arising out of the current drought, which has raised fears of drought. Congress Legislature Party leader Narsingh Mishra raised the issue as soon as the Question Hour began after the House paid tributes to some of the departed members, martyr soldiers and frontline personnel who succumbed to COVID-19.

Even as Speaker SN Patro accepted the BJP’s notice on the adjournment motion on the dry period after the Question Hour, Congress MLAs demanded that all works be canceled and a special discussion on the situation be held, which they Said “most important”. As soon as Patro flagged off the Question Hour, Congress MLAs led by Jaipur MLA Taraprasad Bahinipati came to the well of the House and raised slogans against the government, terming it “anti-farmer”. After his repeated appeals to bring back normalcy failed, the Speaker adjourned the House for an hour as some members of the Grand Old Party attempted to climb his podium.

Agitated Congress MLAs alleged that the BJD government has failed to address the problems of farmers as 27 out of 30 districts in the state are facing drought. However, the situation returned to normal when the House resumed its proceedings after an hour’s adjournment. Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment Minister Arun Kumar Sahu will answer the debate.

Leader of the House and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik earlier in the day made reference to the demise of former MLAs, including former minister Bijayshree Routray, who passed away recently. Apart from the Chief Minister, Leader of Opposition (LoP) of BJP Pradipta Kumar Naik participated in the session through video conference. While Patnaik was attached to his residence, Nayak, who is undergoing treatment at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, joined the hospital.

“I have not fully recovered, but my priority will always be to faithfully fulfill the responsibilities that people have given me; I will attend the assembly session from the hospital and draw the attention of the Odisha government towards all the issues of the public. ,” Naik tweeted. The House began the monsoon session with strict adherence to the COVID guidelines as police imposed prohibitory orders around the assembly premises.

Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner SK Priyadarshi said 35 police platoons with QRTs have been deployed around the assembly.
