DRDO: ‘DRDO has set aside Rs 1,200 crore for research’. Ahmedabad News – Times of India

AHMEDABAD: The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has earmarked an outlay of Rs 1,200 crore to support academic research in the defense sector. DRDO Chairman, Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy. He delivered the keynote address at the DRDO Townhall organized as part of a design program by a private university near Ahmedabad.
“DRDO is working with at least 300 institutions for its academic research program and 1,200 scholars are associated with it. An outlay of around Rs 1,200 crore has been earmarked to support these institutions, including Gujarat University,” Reddy said virtually while addressing the Ahmedabad Design Week 3.0. Karnavati University Ursad, Gandhinagar. Gujarat University Recently an MoU was signed with DRDO to set up a Center of Excellence for Defense Research.
“A total of 500 research students will work with the Center of Excellence, which will have core research related to defence. Around 40 students have already registered for the courses and they will get an opportunity to work in the defense laboratory,” Reddy said.
A skill development program has been launched by DRDO which is approved by AICTE mtech Course in Defense Technology, said DRDO Chairman. “This year at least 40 educational institutions have started postgraduate courses in the defense sector,” he said.
The DRDO chief also mentioned that there is a lot of scope for the youth to work on innovative products in this area. “The youth are entering into defense technologies in a big way. Along with a lot of students, people from startups and industries Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), attached to the Department of Defense Research and Development, are given viability gap funding to conduct feasibility tests for the ideas,” he said. According to him, India should focus on becoming self-reliant in the defense sector. “We should not only make products in India but also make them for the world. To be able to achieve this, we must make good quality and technologically advanced products,” Reddy further added.
