Skincare: Experts Explain Why We Should Be Exfoliating Our Skin

Our skin is a protective barrier and it prevents the penetration of pollutants and microbes. When it comes to rejuvenating the skin, nothing feels better than giving yourself a scrub or in other words, exfoliating it. Exfoliating is the process of removing dead cells from the surface of the skin using a scrub or exfoliating tool. In a new Instagram post, dermatologist Dr Jayshree Sharad highlights the benefits of exfoliation, saying anyone in their “mid or late twenties” can start exfoliating, although there is no specific age.

In the post Dr Jayshree Sharad also says that exfoliation should be done based on one’s skin type. Underlining the need for exfoliation, she says that skin cells have a 28-day cycle, where the innermost layer of the epidermis gradually moves to the topmost layer. “These dead cells are usually shed on a microscopic level every day. With age, sun exposure, stress, pollution, smoking, unhealthy lifestyle, this cell cycle gets disrupted. That’s when dead cells build up. This is because the light, which falls on the surface of the skin, is absorbed instead of reflected back,” she says in the post.

Dr Jayshree Sharad says that those with oily skin can exfoliate twice a week. For normal skin, the requirement is only once a week. People with dry skin can exfoliate once in two weeks, while those with sensitive skin should opt for gentle exfoliation once a month.

“Mechanical exfoliation is done with a mild scrub. Do not exfoliate,” she says in her post.
