Dr Baidyanath Chakraborty, a pioneer in IVF research, dies at the age of 94

New Delhi: Dr Baidyanath Chakraborty, one of the pioneers in IVF research, passed away on Friday at the age of 94 after a prolonged illness in Kolkata, where he was hospitalised.

The hospital said Dr Chakraborty, who also developed pneumonia, had been undergoing treatment at Salt Lake Hospital since mid-March following a massive cardiac arrest.

“He was diagnosed with several ailments, mostly age-related. He breathed his last in the morning,” news agency PTI quoted a hospital official as saying.

In the afternoon, his body was brought to his residence and from there it was taken to his old clinic on CIT Road, where people bid farewell to the doctor.

Expressing grief, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that her death has caused an irreparable loss to the field of medicine and research.

CM Banerjee said in a statement, “He was a pioneer in the field of IVF or artificial insemination research and treatment in India. The Institute of Reproductive Medicine founded by this experienced doctor has helped countless childless couples to have children.”

Dr. Chakraborty established the Institute of Reproductive Medicine (IRM) in the year 1986 for artificial insemination research. He handed it over to ICMR in 2019.

The state government also gave him the Lifetime Achievement Award in the year 2019.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a process in which an egg is combined with a sperm in an artificial environment or in an artificial environment for fertilization. After that, one or more fertilized eggs can be transferred to the woman’s uterus where they can implant and develop in the lining of the uterus.
