‘Don’t be afraid of contempt of court… Police is under me’: Tripura CM visits his old city

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb once again courted controversy when he asked officials not to fear contempt of court and said he would deal with such cases.

The Chief Minister said, “The court can order but who will follow the order, the police is under me”.

Addressing the 26th biennial conference of TCS officers at Rabindra Bhavan on Saturday, the Chief Minister said, “I have been told by many officers that they cannot do a particular work as doing so would amount to contempt of court. Why be afraid of it? The court will give its decision, but the police will implement it. The police is under me. The police have many ways and I am a witness to it.”

Last week, Deb, who was targeted by the Trinamool Congress over his poll promises, responded to criticism by calling the TMC “political migrants” who are dreaming of half roti. He said that the people of Tripura know how to live with dignity and will not settle for just half a roti. TMC has continuously attacked Biplab regarding unemployment and has started preparations for 2023 assembly elections.

The Chief Minister said that the BJP government of the state is opening many avenues of employment, claiming to bring transparency in recruitment for government jobs. Biplab stressed that everyone is getting equal employment opportunities without any political influence.

Another contentious issue between the BJP government and the TMC is the appointment of teachers. The BJP government came to power in 2017 on a promise to restore 10,323 teachers who lost their jobs after the Supreme Court declared their recruitment process unconstitutional.

Despite being in power for more than three years, the Biplab government failed to fulfill its election promises. TMC has been targeting the BJP government on this issue.
