Domestic passengers touch 50 lakh mark in July, up 61% from June 2021 – Times of India

New Delhi: With the second wave of the deadly Covid subsiding, India saw 50.1 lakh people flying within the country this July – 61% more than the previous month’s 31.1 lakh. The aviation phase in January, February and March, 2021 saw a smart recovery with over 77 lakh domestic passengers in each month.
Then as the disastrous second wave intensified, the number fell to 57.2 lakh in April and a fatal drop to 21.1 lakh in May. Since then, as the situation gradually improved, the numbers started increasing. First it increased to 31.1 lakhs in June and then touched 50 lakhs last month.
In July, 2021, DGCA data shows that IndiGo dominates the domestic skies with a market share of 58.6%. After this only Air India’s domestic market share was in double digits at 13.4%. All other airlines were in single digits with major players – SpiceJet (9.1%), Vistara (8.1%) and GoAir (6.8%).
AirAsia India (AAIPL) has shrunk and has a market share of only 3.3%. In contrast, AirAsia India’s domestic market share is 7.3% in pre-Covid February 2020. The Tata group has bid for Air India through AAIPL.
Saw SpiceJet last month domestic flight Most filled with aircraft occupancy at 74.6%, followed by Vistara at 69.2%.
Aviation stakeholders – and everyone else – are fingers crossed that there is no third wave to rout the green shoots of recovery seen in a largely deadly second wave in the economy. Most of the Indian airlines, airport operators and other aviation stakeholders are struggling to survive as travel is one of the worst-hit sectors.
