Documentary on Sushil Majumdar traces the illustrious journey of the iconic filmmaker-actor – Times of India

Legendary filmmaker and actor Sushil Majumdar left an indelible mark in Indian cinema with cult classics like ‘Lal Patthar’, ‘Hospital’, ‘Jogajog’, ‘Rikta’, and ‘Bhanga Gara’ to name a few in a career spanning more than 50 years.

Now, a documentary has been made on the legendary filmmaker titled ‘Sushil Majumdar-The Doyen’s Journey through Time’. The docu film, directed by Indranil Sarkar, highlights the man beyond his filmmaking career, the director and the legacy Sushil Majumdar left behind.

It also features interviews with film luminaries such as Lily Chakraborty, Sabitri Chatterjee, Shatabdi Roy, Sandip Roy and many more. The documentary focuses on the man, the director and the actor who was ahead of his time, and the social statements he made with his films.

The iconic filmmaker exceled both in Bengal and Mumbai working with all the greats of his time including Uttam Kumar, Suchitra Sen, Supriya Devi, Chabi Biswas, Bhanu Banerjee, Raaj Kumar, Naseem Banu, Hema Malini, Rakhee and even Satyajit Ray who directed him in ‘Chiriakhana’. He was among the pioneers who paved the glorious path of not only the Bengali film industry but Indian cinema as well.

Sushil Majumdar’s illustrious journey started in 1928 and he went on to direct several Bengali and Hindi films. Being the student of Rabindranath Tagore, he was very passionate about acting, so before directing his first film, he acted in films made by Promotesh Barua and Devaki Kumar Basu. But that was not all as he kept a role for himself in every film he directed. His last directorial, the Hindi classic ‘Lal Patthar’, was completed in 1971 and even after that he kept on acting in a number of Bengali films throughout his life.
