Two days after the murder of a 53-year-old doctor, police apprehended an accused linked with the incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur. Additionally, they announced a cash reward of Rs 50,000 for the prime accused, said the officials.
As per Superintendent of Police Somen Barma, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Kotwali police station, Ram Ashish Upadhyay, has been suspended due to alleged negligence in carrying out his duties concerning this matter.
The victim, Ghanshyam Tripathi, who was stationed at the Jaisinghpur Community Health Centre, lost his life after reportedly being assaulted by several individuals over a land dispute in the Kotwali area on Saturday.
SP Barma disclosed that Jagdish Narayan has been taken into custody in connection with Tripathi’s tragic demise and has been remanded to judicial custody.
He further stated that a cash reward of Rs 50,000 has been announced for the prime accused, Ajay Narayan Singh. Moreover, a case has been registered against the accused under pertinent sections of the IPC including sections 302 (punishment for murder), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as the Criminal Law Amendment Act.
The SP also conveyed that round-the-clock police protection has been provided to the deceased doctor’s wife, Nisha.
Furthermore, he emphasized that the police and district administration are taking appropriate measures regarding the government land parcels that were encroached upon by Ajay Narayan Singh.
The doctor’s family, who had initially declined to perform his last rites, carried out the ceremony on Monday after the district magistrate of Sultanpur met with them and assured them that their demands would be addressed.
Tripathi’s family had presented six demands, including a request for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to visit them. Other demands comprised securing a job for the victim’s wife, providing Rs 1 crore in compensation, the immediate arrest of the accused, demolition of their property, and resolution of the disputed land issue.

The doctor’s final rites took place at the Dhopap Dham Ghat in the presence of a police contingent. Several local leaders and administrative officials attended the ceremony.
While in Sultanpur on Monday, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav made accusations against the BJP, suggesting a link between the accused and the party. However, he did not elaborate on the claim. Akhilesh Yadav also commented on his perception that when individuals associated with the BJP are involved in crimes, they seem to avoid consequences, referencing Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath metaphorically with the phrase “keys of Baba’s bulldozer do not work.”
He further alleged that the family members of the accused, who are connected to the BJP, played a role in the doctor’s murder and urged the government to deliver justice to the grieving family within 24 hours.
