Doctor Goes To Renew His US Passport, Loses Citizenship Instead, Reason Is Hilarious

Siavash Sobhani, a 62-year-old doctor from Virginia, United States has been stripped of his citizenship despite being born in the United States and practicing medicine for over 30 years in the country. The reason being given for him being stripped of his citizenship is his late father’s designation as an Iranian diplomat at the time of his birth.

According to reports, Siavash found out he was stateless after he got a letter from a State Department official. The letter informed him that he was granted US citizenship by mistake when he was an infant. The letter further informed him that people born in the US to parents with diplomatic immunity don’t automatically acquire US citizenship.

Speaking with Washington Post Siavash said “This was a shock to me”. He further added that he is a doctor and have been in America all his life. He paid all his taxes, voted for presidents and served his community in Northern Virginia. During Covid, he was at work, putting himself and his family at risk.  Suddenly after 61 years, he has been informed that he’s no longer a US citizen,

Siavash later applied for a new passport in February and expected hassle free procedure as he had renewed his passport many times earlier without any problems. However, this time, he did not receive his new passport. Instead, he got the letter from the State Department which informed him about the same.  The letter also directed him to a website where he could apply for permanent residence.
