Diwali 2021: 7 different reasons why we celebrate the festival of lights

Diwali, the festival of lights, has arrived. That time of the year has come when we put on our clothes and light up our homes with diyas and diyas. But do you know that there is more than one reason to celebrate Diwali? Here are some surprising facts that you may not have known before.

1. According to the Ramayana, Lord Rama, his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana finally returned to Ayodhya after spending 14 years in exile and defeating the demon king Ravana. Diwali marks their return home.

2. According to the most popular tradition, Diwali is celebrated as the day when Goddess Lakshmi was born from the churning of the ocean, the churning of the cosmic ocean of milk by the gods and demons. On the night of Diwali, Lakshmi chose Vishnu as her husband and the two tied the knot.

3. In the epic Mahabharata, five Pandava brothers were tricked into gambling for losing a bet, after which they were exiled for 12 years by the Kauravas. According to the epic, Diwali is the day the Pandavas return to Hastinapur on the night of Kartik Amavasya.

4. In Sikhism, Diwali is related to the event of the release of Guru Hargobind by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir.

5. In Jainism, the festival of Diwali is celebrated to commemorate the anniversary of Mahavira’s soul finally attaining Nirvana.

6. In some states of western India, such as Gujarat, the festival of Diwali marks the beginning of a new year.

7. Eastern India, especially West Bengal, celebrates Diwali as Kali Puja in honor of Goddess Kali, who is known to go on a destructive rampage to cleanse the earth of all demons.
