New Delhi: A New Establishment oxygen plant in a hospital Tihar Jail will be operational in four days while all dispensaries in all three prison premises Delhi is designated as covid care center Amid a surge in infections, officials said on Sunday.
As part of the steps taken against the spread of the viral disease in Tihar, Mandoli and Rohini Jail ComplexHe said that several medical isolation cells have been set up for prisoners showing mild symptoms of Kovid-19.
Those who test positive but are asymptomatic will be kept in separate isolation cells within the same prison complex.
Central Jail number one to nine in Tihar Jail, Central Jail number 10 in Rohini Complex and Central Jail number 11 to 16 in Mandoli Jail Complex.
The 120 bedded hospital in Tihar and 48 bedded facility at Mandoli have been converted into COVID health centers with round the clock presence of doctors, 50 oxygen concentrators and more than 100 cylinders and medicines required to treat the patients.
“However, if the condition of a COVID positive prisoner becomes critical, he/she will be immediately shifted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital or Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital,” a senior jail official said.
The newly installed oxygen plant will mostly start functioning within four days, the official said.
The jail administration said that they have formed four committees for the prisoner and staff who test positive of Kovid.
Each of these panels is divided into four jurisdictions, each consisting of four members, including prison staff and officers, tasked with looking after them if they need further assistance and guidance.
Sandeep Goel, Director (Delhi Jail) said, “We are fully prepared to deal with the situation of Kovid. Even in the first and second wave, we had taken many stringent measures and this was the reason why we were keeping the infection rate low. There were more casualties. Least. We will deal with the ongoing pandemic with confidence.”
Goel said, “We make a separate barrack for older inmates, where we keep some young prisoners with us. The temperature and oxygen level of these prisoners are checked daily and if anyone shows any Covid symptoms. If so, they are immediately separated.”
The official said that all the new prisoners will have to undergo quarantine for 10 days and mandatorily undergo rapid-antigen test.
As far as possible, social distancing is followed between staff and prisoners. Officials said inmates are mostly confined to their wards and an educational and awareness program about adhering to the COVID norms is conducted regularly.
As of 7 January, the total number of prisoners in the three jails of Delhi was 18,528. Tihar has maximum 12,669 prisoners, Mandoli 4,018 and Rohini 1,841 prisoners.
As of 8 January, a total of 34 prisoners are Kovid positive. Of these, 19 are from Tihar and 15 from Mandoli. Of the 40 infected staff members, 25 are from Tihar, 11 from Rohini and four from Mandoli.
In 2020, a total of 120 inmates of the Delhi Jail tested positive for COVID, out of which two died. All 293 Kovid positive employees have been cured.
Last year, 383 prisoners tested positive and eight of them died. Of the 225 employees infected, all have been cured.
The immunization status of inmates of Delhi jails as on December 31 was 22,620, out of which 15,452 received the first dose and 7,168 received the second dose.
