Vadodara: GMERS Medical College, tribe Demanded police action against an alumnus of the college by sacking two junior resident doctors ragging The incident took place in his hostel premises in the early hours of Saturday.
The 12-member anti-ragging committee of the college on Sunday held a meeting based on a formal complaint received from second year MBBS students who were asked to do 100 sit-ups by their seniors.
According to the complaint, at around 4 am on Saturday morning, around 60 students of second year were woken up by their seniors, made them stand in line and asked them to do sit-ups.
The first incident of ragging has shook the medical college as a second year student started vomiting, collapsed and was taken to the casualty ward for treatment.
“The student who has had a check-up at the orthopedic department is stable. All his reports are normal. But he was already undergoing psychiatric treatment and the incident has put him in shock,” said Dr Varsha Godbole, dean of the college.
“We have eliminated two junior residents who were with the orthopedic and surgery departments. The third person who is said to have gone with both is an alumnus, but is not working with us in any capacity. We will contact the police on Monday and take a collective decision about that too.”
Godbole confirmed that some third year students whose names have also been taken by second year students will face action after due scrutiny.
On Sunday, the third year students claimed before the panel that they were pressured by the trio, including two junior residents and their friend, to ragged the second year students as they were not showing “respect” to their seniors.
But the panel has also received statements from some second year students who said that seniors were generous with those who could not do sit-ups.
“We have assured all the students that we will take strict action against all those found guilty so that such incident does not recur in our college,” he said.
