With the addition of new flights, the number of movements (arrivals and departures) in Kolkata will be around 390, which is currently over 300-350.

Kolkata: The city will get direct flights to Udaipur, Jodhpur and Coimbatore and one-stop connections to Leh, Kanpur, Bhavnagar and Jaisalmer from next month, with IndiGo and SpiceJet adding several new flights to these regions.
With the addition of new flights, the number of movements (arrivals and departures) in Kolkata will be around 390, which is currently over 300-350. Currently, flight numbers are high on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays when there is no restriction on flight arrivals from Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. On other days of the week, the count drops sharply.
SpiceJet has written to the Chief Secretary of Bengal requesting the three states to withdraw the ban on flights as the demand for travel has increased. The number of passengers at Kolkata airport is likely to increase from around 45,000 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday to around 55,000-60,000. It is almost at pre-pandemic level. With international battles on, daily commuters are around 7,000-8,000 below pre-pandemic levels.
IndiGo which currently operates 88 flights from Kolkata will add direct flights to Jodhpur from October 31. The airline will also add direct flights to Udaipur and Coimbatore from November 2. The movement of IndiGo aircraft at Kolkata airport has increased from 42 in May to 80 in June. From 104 in July to 176 in October.
SpiceJet, another low-cost airline, is also increasing flights from Kolkata. While it will operate direct flights for Kolkata-Udaipur on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, one-stop connections to Leh, Kanpur, Bhavnagar and Jaisalmer are being considered.
While the new routes will be convenient, airlines are hoping that the ban on flights from Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Pune will be lifted soon as these are high-traffic areas. “The airlines here are still waiting for DGCA approval for fresh slots to accommodate the full capacity of flights. But once it is allowed, the rush of passengers at the airport will surely increase further. If there is no fresh Covid surge and all state restrictions are also withdrawn, we will reach the pre-Covid count by the end of this year,” said Kolkata airport director C Pattabhi.
