DRDA took up the task of building more rainwater harvesting structures to protect it Water Instead of letting it go to waste as runoff from the monsoon. Government and school buildings across the district including panchayats were selected for setting up RWH structures. These were installed with a capacity to store between 9,000 liters and 18,000 liters in a sump after proper filtration.
The rainwater thus collected is directly pumped into the upper tanks of the buildings and used in toilets.
The program was launched by District Collector S Visakan under the guidance of Cooperation Minister I Periyasamy and Food and Civil Supplies A Sakkarapani, local ministers on November 10.
As Rain Work began two weeks after the start, with almost all of the RWHs being filled in the next few years. In the event of a drain clogged, the excess water flows through a connected pipeline into soak pits, abandoned borewells and storm water drains to recharge groundwater.
The location for setting up the work site was earmarked for non-clay soils, not in the catchment and non-rocky.
District Collector S Visakan said that they have been able to harvest two crore liters of rain water through these structures. The annual average rainfall in Dindigul district is 1,000 mm. One liter of water can be conserved by getting one mm of rainfall on a square meter surface. Therefore, RWHs installed in 1,115 buildings at 611 locations will help in saving 10.33 crore liters of water annually, he said.
