Amid the uproar, Legislative Council Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe adjourned the proceedings for 10 minutes in protest against the Karnataka government’s act of blocking funds.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Ambadas Danve on Tuesday questioned the silence of the ruling parties in the state on the Karnataka government’s move to stop health benefit funds being allocated by the Maharashtra government to border villages with significant Marathi population. There was an uproar in the council.

Amid the uproar, Legislative Council Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe adjourned the proceedings for 10 minutes in protest against the Karnataka government’s act of blocking funds.

However, he observed that the opposition leaders have behaved irresponsibly and immaturely.

Earlier, Danve said that the Karnataka government was withholding Rs 54 crore allocated to provide health benefits to Marathi people living there (in border villages).

“BJP is in power in Karnataka, still no one is objecting to this move in Maharashtra. Money is for increasing health benefits. It is highly condemnable,” said the Leader of the Opposition in the Council.

However, BJP MLAs objected to Danve’s remarks. Soon, members of the ruling party and the opposition started debating the issue vigorously.

Gorhe’s repeated appeals to bring order failed to have the desired effect, forcing him to adjourn the proceedings for 10 minutes at around 1:45 pm.

“To mark my protest against the Karnataka government’s act of blocking funds, I adjourn the Council for ten minutes, but the opposition leaders have behaved irresponsibly and immaturely.” The Eknath Shinde-BJP government recently announced an additional Rs 54 crore to implement the ‘Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana’ in the border villages of Karnataka.

Amid criticism from the opposition, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had said on Wednesday that his government would take measures to stop the Maharashtra government from offering the health insurance scheme to 865 border villages.
