BJP national vice-president Dilip Ghosh was on Saturday stopped by the police from campaigning for his party’s candidate in a ward in Bidhannagar. A police officer said Ghosh was campaigning with over 50 people in Jagatpur Bazar area of ward number 20 of Bidhannagar, in violation of the State Election Commission’s directions to limit the number of campaigners to only five at a time .
The official also said that Ghosh had started an argument after being told about the violation of the norms. The BJP leader, however, claimed that the police was only enforcing SEC rules on members of his party.
He also said that only four people were with him and the rest were local people who had come to meet him. “What’s the point of this election if we can’t campaign? There were only four people with me. The rest were local people who had come to meet me, Ghosh insisted.
When contacted, TMC’s state spokesperson Kunal Ghosh claimed that the senior BJP leader had violated the COVID protocol in the past also during the election campaign in Asansol. “Everyone remembers how the TMC was stopped from campaigning during the Agartala Municipal Corporation elections (in Tripura) last year. So Dilip Ghosh should stop talking.”
Elections to the Vidhannagar Municipal Corporation and three other municipal bodies are to be held on February 12.
