The results of the by-elections held on October 30 are going to increase the concern of the two Chief Ministers of BJP. The by-elections for Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur and Karnataka CM Basavaraj S Bommai have not been as desired. In fact, the BJP high command has changed its four chief ministers in 6 months, including Vijay Rupani of Gujarat, BS Yediyurappa of Karnataka and Trivendra Singh Rawat and Tirath Singh Rawat in Uttarakhand. In such a situation, the chair of CM Jairam and Basavaraj can also be in danger.

The results of the by-elections in Himachal were quite the opposite for the BJP. Here the Congress captured three assembly and one Lok Sabha seat. CM Thakur accepted defeat and said that the party would learn from it. He alleged that Congress played an emotional card in Mandi Lok Sabha seat by fielding Pratibha Singh, wife of former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh. He appealed to the party workers not to be disheartened by the results and said that preparations should be started for next year’s assembly elections.

BJP changed CM before elections in Gujarat
Assembly elections in Himachal are only a few months away. However, this may not come as a relief to Thakur. Such a change has been seen in Gujarat. Elections are also to be held in Gujarat next year, but a few months before that BJP changed the entire cabinet along with the CM. Here Upendra Patel was made the Chief Minister instead of Vijay Rupani.

Yeddyurappa replaced Bommai as Chief Minister
The challenge for CM Bommai is of a different kind. The by-elections to the two assembly seats were the first major electoral test for the Lingayat leader, in which he did not fully meet. The BJP high command had made Bommai the chief minister in place of Yeddyurappa. There was a long discussion between the central leadership regarding this.

Bommai could not win in the home town Hangal
The BJP candidate has won the Sindgi seat of the state. This seat has been lost by Janata Dal (Secular). However, the BJP had to face defeat in the Hangal assembly seat. Hangal is Bommai’s home town. Despite this, the defeat of the party candidate has drawn lines of concern for the CM. Bommai himself campaigned vigorously in the election, but failed to consolidate his position.
