There are differences among farmers’ unions over the gherao of political parties that are campaigning in their own way during the election year in Punjab. The leaders of the farmer unions are seen divided into two factions on this issue. There is also a split in the United Kisan Front, which is leading the farmers’ movement on the Delhi border.

Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Ugrahan president Joginder Singh Ugrahan believes that only the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) should be opposed in Punjab as the new farming laws have been enacted by the BJP-led central government. Ugrahan has also made it clear that people associated with his union in Punjab will oppose only BJP leaders. On the other hand, many other organizations including Bharatiya Kisan Union Rajewal are adamant on opposing all political parties. It is clear that 32 farmers’ organizations of Punjab have different opinions on this issue and in the coming time there may be a split among the farmers working at the grassroot level. If this happens then it will have a direct impact on the ongoing struggle in Delhi.

BJP brought the law, so the opposition is also against it: Ugrahan

Joginder Singh Ugrahan said in a phone conversation that the BJP-led government has brought the new farming law. The Prime Minister and all other BJP leaders are adamant that the laws will not be repealed, so they should be opposed. The BKU Ugrahan will do the same thing during the Punjab Assembly elections.

Joginder Singh Ugrahan said that he was not present in the meeting in which the leaders of United Farmers Front held a meeting with political parties in Chandigarh recently and decided to oppose all political parties in it. Ugrahan clarified that the decision taken in Chandigarh was not the decision of the United Kisan Morcha as decisions in the United Kisan Morcha are taken at the national level. He does not agree with the decision taken by the organizations of Punjab in Chandigarh. He said that there are many organizations involved in the farmers’ movement, which are associated with some political party in one way or the other.

On the other hand Balbir Singh Rajewal, leader of BKYU (Rajewal) is firm on his stand of opposing all political parties. In a phone conversation, Rajewal said that all political parties should stop campaigning as this would end the brotherly harmony in the villages and affect the ongoing struggle along the Delhi border.

Rajewal said that the farmers’ organizations had made it clear to the political parties on Sunday itself that they should not hold political meetings. Now if any other party including Shiromani Akali Dal Badal will hold public meetings, then it is bound to be opposed.

After differences emerged between the two big leaders of the Kisan Union, Balvir Singh Rajewal and Joginder Singh Ugrahan, the rest of the farmers’ organizations are also seen divided. Kirti Kisan Union President Rajinder Singh Deepsinhwala said that he has been saying since the beginning that all political parties are the same and there should be opposition from all.

In fact, during the movement against the farming laws, differences have been seen in the farmers’ organizations in the past. There have been differences of opinion among farmers organizations about first traveling to Delhi, then campaigning against BJP in West Bengal and now holding public meetings in UP. Differences of farmer leaders have also come to the fore in the meetings being held on the Singhu border in Delhi, but this is the first time that public rhetoric is being made against each other.
