Diesel vehicles completing 10 years on January 1, 2022 will be deregistered in Delhi

New Delhi: In an order issued by the Delhi Transport Department, it has been said that the registration of all diesel vehicles which have completed 10 years on January 1, 2022, will be cancelled. The order said that no objection certificate (NOC) will be issued so that they can be re-registered at other places.

However, NOC will not be issued to diesel vehicles that have completed 15 years or more in compliance with the directions issued by the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

“The department shall cancel the registration of all such diesel vehicles in Delhi on January 1, 2022, which have completed or are about to complete 10 years as on that date,” the order said.

The order comes after the NGT’s directions to prohibit the registration and operation of diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years in Delhi NCR.

The tribunal had said that deregistration of 15-year-old diesel vehicles should be done on priority basis. The NGT had said that the use of diesel in vehicles is highly toxic and carcinogenic and causes untimely death.

Accordingly, the Department shall cancel the registration of all such diesel vehicles in Delhi on January 1, 2022, which have completed or are completing 10 years as on that date, the order of the Transport Department said.

In the order of the Delhi Transport Department, it has been said that NOC can be issued anywhere in the country for 10 years old diesel vehicles and 15 years old petrol vehicles.

“This will be subject to the condition that NOC will not be issued by the states for places identified as restricted areas for re-registration,” the order said.

The order said that people will have the option of converting their 10-year-old diesel or 15-year-old petrol vehicles to electric vehicles, if they wish to continue using them.

Those opting for this will have to retrofit such vehicles with empaneled electric kits through agencies approved by the Delhi government.

In 2015, the NGT had banned all diesel vehicles older than 10 years from plying on the roads of Delhi-NCR.
