Did you know that this Jayalalithaa film was based on Rajinikanth’s Mannan?

Jayalalithaa, popularly known as Amma, was born on 24 February 1948. She was the first Indian politician to serve as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for six terms. She was a revolutionary and a leader or Puratchi Thalaivi, as her cadre referred to her. However, before entering politics, Jayalalithaa had a brief but illustrious career as an actor.

According to sources, there was a strained relationship between Jayalalithaa and superstar Rajinikanth. However, there is an interesting truth about his films. One of Rajinikanth’s films was an adaptation of Jayalalithaa’s popular film Kanavan.

Released on August 15, 1968, Kanavan starred Jayalalithaa opposite MGR. MGR and Jayalalithaa were the favorites back in the day. The plot revolved around Vellaiya and Rani. Rani is a rich girl whose father has a mill.

The film’s protagonist, Vellaiya, is a factory worker and a unionist. After her father’s death, she struggles to get her father’s wealth. She then marries Vallaiya to gain control of her father’s legacy and reunite leader. However, later he falls in love with her. The film was directed by P. Neelakantan.

Rajinikanth, on the other hand, acted in a film titled Mannan, helmed by P. Vasu, which released in 1992. The film shared a similar plot to Jayalalithaa’s Kanavan.

The plot tells the story of Krishnan and Shanti. Shanti, Krishnan’s supervisor, is an authoritarian, forceful woman whom he frequently challenges. Irritated and angry, she molests her paralyzed mother and marries her to gain control over her.

Jayalalithaa’s film also inspired several remakes before Mannan. Dasari Narayana Rao, who had already heard the story, bought the story rights of the film and remade it in Telugu under the name Sita Ramulu. The film was released in 1980.

It was also made in Hindi by Dasari Narayan. The Hindi remake was released titled Haisiyat, starring Jitendra and Jaya Prada as Ram and Sita respectively.

The Hindi remake was released in 1984. The film was successful in all three languages. Two years after the release of the Hindi film, Anurag Alaritu was released in Kannada with a similar story. The film was adapted from a novel of the same name by Radha Devi.
