Sharmila Tagore revealed that she had to work rigorously during the initial days of her career for various reasons.

Veteran actress Sharmila Tagore is considered a living legend in Indian cinema. She was a leading lady and among the highest-paid actresses in the 1970s. Throughout her career, she has worked in a lot of films with superstars like Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna, and Jeetendra. She is known for her tremendous acting skills and her on-screen chemistry with her co-stars. The actress made a comeback to the silver screen with an OTT release, Gulmohar, this year. During the promotions of this film earlier this year, Sharmila Tagore revealed that she had to work rigorously during the initial days of her career in order to pay her rent.

Sharmila Tagore spoke about her journey as an actress. In the interview, Sharmila said that she had worked in films for many reasons. Expressing her views, she said, “As professionals, we worked in films, sometimes for money and sometimes just so that we could pay the house rent. Sometimes we do a film because our colleague felt that it would be good for him if I was a part of his film.”

Sharmila Tagore started acting at the age of 13. She made her debut in the critically-acclaimed film Apur Sansar, which was directed by legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray. Her debut in the Hindi film industry came in 1964 with the film Kashmir Ki Kali.

One of the most successful films of her career released in 1969 and became a cult classic. The name of the film was Aradhana, and it was made under the direction of Shakti Samanta. The film starred Sharmila and Rajesh Khanna in the lead roles. Apart from Rajesh Khanna, actors like Farida Jalala, Sujit Kumar, Subhash Ghai, and Ashok Kumar also played important roles in this film. This film had huge earnings and collected Rs 17.85 crore at the box office. The film was highly appreciated by the audience as well as the critics. In an interview, Sharmila revealed that if the film had been released today, it would have earned around Rs 900 crore and would have competed with RRR.
