New Delhi: The delta plus version of COVID-19 has a higher affinity for lung tissue than other strains, but that doesn’t mean it will cause severe disease or is more contagious, chief of the coronavirus working group NTAGI Dr NK Arora said.
A new viral variant of the coronavirus, Delta Plus, was identified on June 11. It was recently classified as a type of anxiety.
So far, 51 cases of Delta Plus have been detected in 12 states, with Maharashtra reporting the maximum number of such cases.
Talking about Delta Plus, the chairman of the COVID-19 Working Group of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI) said that it has been found that the variants have higher levels of lung tissue than other strains of the coronavirus. but clarified that this does not mean that the Delta Plus variant will cause more severe disease or is more transmissible.
“Delta Plus has a greater affinity for the mucosal lining in the lungs than the other variants, but if this causes damage or not it is not yet clear. It also does not mean that this variant is more severe. Will cause disease or is it more contagious,” Arora told PTI in an interview.
He said the impact of the delta plus strain would be clearer only when more cases are identified, but the disease appears to be generally mild in all who have received a single or double dose of the vaccine.
“We need to keep a very close watch and watch its spread so that it can give us transmission efficiency,” he said.
Arora said the number of identified cases of the Delta Plus variant could be higher as there could be many asymptomatic individuals too – who do not have any COVID-19 symptoms but are carrying the virus and spreading it.
“But the important thing is that our genomic surveillance component has picked it up correctly and very quickly. What will happen now is that the states have already been told that this is a type of concern and it requires action which means It is clear that many states have already started micro planning for the districts where the virus has been identified so as to prevent their spread. Obviously, vaccination in these districts will have to be increased.”
Responding to a question whether the Delta Plus variant could trigger the third wave of coronavirus, Arora said it is difficult to assess right now.
“Waves are associated with new variants or new mutations, so there is a possibility because this is a new variant, but whether it will lead to a third wave is difficult to answer because it will depend on two or three things,” he said. said.
“First thing is we had a brutal second wave in the last three months and it is still going on, we are seeing from the last 8-10 days that the number of cases is stuck at 50,000, while in some places cases Keep coming. So that the wave doesn’t calm down.”
He said that the second wave will affect the response of the community in a different way and the third wave will depend on what proportion of the population got infected in the second wave.
“If a large proportion is infected then in the next wave people may develop a common cold-like illness, but may not develop severe or fatal disease,” he said.
“Second, another thing that is important is vaccination – the faster we vaccinate … even a single dose is effective and the way we are planning, if we vaccinate rapidly.
