delhi weather update: A thick layer of fog prevailed in Delhi-NCR on Sunday (January 8). A severe cold wave-like situation was recorded continuously in the national capital even today.

Around 42 trains are running late in Northern Railway zone due to fog.

Delayed trains:

Many trains were delayed in North India due to fog. Dhananjay Kumar, a passenger at the railway station, said, “I had come from Patna in Bihar and my train reached here late by 2-3 hours due to the fog.”

Around 20 flights were delayed at the Delhi airport due to bad weather. A Delhi airport official said that there was no information about any flight diversion till 6 am. Dense fog and cold conditions in the national capital led to considerable delay in flights.

A passenger waiting at the Delhi airport said, “Amidst the severe cold we all are experiencing, the visibility at the airport is very poor.”

IMD Orange Alert:

IMD warned of impact on agriculture, livestock, water supply, transport and power sector in some places. The weatherman also said that prolonged exposure to cold can cause frostbite and that one should not ignore shivering—the first sign that the body is losing heat—and should stay indoors.

The advisory states, ‘Eat fruits and vegetables rich in Vitamin C and drink plenty of warm fluids to maintain adequate immunity. Avoid or limit outdoor activities.

The Meteorological Department has issued an “orange” alert for parts of north India, including Delhi, for Sunday, warning that dense fog, cold days and cold wave conditions will continue.

Severe cold wave conditions are likely to continue in some areas of Rajasthan and Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on December 8 (Sunday) from Sheetlahar. However, there is a possibility of some respite after a few days under the influence of one Western Disturbance, the IMD said.

In the plains, the weather office declares a cold wave if the minimum temperature is 4°C or 10°C and 4.5° below normal. A severe cold wave occurs when the minimum temperature drops by 2 °C or the departure from the normal range is more than 6.4 °C. A cold day is when the minimum temperature is less than or equal to 10 °C and the maximum temperature is at least 4.5 °C below normal.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) uses four color codes for weather warnings:

In the plains, the meteorological department declares a cold wave if the minimum temperature falls by four degrees Celsius or when the minimum temperature is 10 degrees or less and is 4.5 degrees below normal.

A severe cold wave occurs when the minimum temperature drops by two degrees Celsius or the departure from normal exceeds 6.4 degrees. A cold day is when the minimum temperature is less than or equal to 10 °C above normal and the maximum temperature is at least 4.5 °C below normal. An extremely cold day is when the maximum temperature is 6.5 °C or more above normal.
