Several trees were uprooted in the national capital due to the strong storm and strong winds on Monday. This caused damage to vehicles in different parts of the city and several people were injured. Delhi government-run Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Nayak Hospital (LNJP) said that 15 injured were brought to the hospital on Monday after a strong thunderstorm.

“There were three-four people who had suffered fractures due to falling trees on their cars or scooters. Some suffered injuries as the panes of their vehicles (windshield or window) were shattered by falling on trees, while some suffered head injuries. None of them are in critical condition, said Dr. Suresh Kumar, Medical Director of LNJP Hospital.

Meanwhile, the Centre-run RML Hospital in Lutyens’ Delhi, which was one of the worst-affected areas, reported around 25 such cases. Dr BL Sherwal, medical director of RML Hospital, said, “Around 20-25 patients reached the hospital between 8 pm and 11 pm on Monday. None of them suffered any serious injuries.”

Delhi LG promises thorough review of reasons for uprooting of trees

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena said that the government has taken the uprooting of trees in the aftermath of the storm seriously and assured that the issue would be resolved at the earliest. A statement issued by Raj Niwas said that Saxena has called for a thorough review of the reasons and rectification so that such incidents do not recur.

The Lieutenant Governor, Shri VK Saxena, being deeply distressed and concerned by the devastation, disruption and disturbance caused by uprooting of trees due to ‘severe storm’ yesterday, has asked for a thorough review and rectification of the reasons so that such incidents do not recur. A tweet from the LG office said.

Power cuts and traffic jams in many parts of Delhi

The power supply was affected in areas like Dwarka, Defense Colony, Minto Road, Vijay Nagar, Mayur Vihar, Jangpura, Civil Lines, Palam Vihar, Mangolpuri, Karawal Nagar, Nand Nagri, Rohini, Pitampura, Burari, Bawana, Najafgarh, Nangloi among other places.

Motors got stuck in areas near Ferozeshah Road, Tolstoy Marg, Copernicus Road, KG Marg and Pandit Ravi Shankar Shukla Lane following heavy rains.

Many trees were uprooted in the storm

According to data provided by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, at least 215 trees were either uprooted or damaged across the city, except in the Lutyens’ Delhi area, where 77 trees were felled due to the storm on Monday evening. Areas where trees were uprooted under MCD include Rohini, Ajmeri Gate, Daryaganj, Sunder Nagar, Paharganj, Naraina, Jamia Nagar, Okhla, New Friends Colony, Jangpura, Bawana Depot, Azadpur, Civil Lines, Vikaspuri, Saket, Sunder Nagari, pleasure included. Vihar, Mayur Vihar, Lajpat Nagar, ITO, and Malviya Nagar, among others.

Central dome of Jama Masjid damaged

Meanwhile, the central dome of Jama Masjid also suffered major damage due to heavy rains and thunderstorms, injuring two-three people. The umbrella of Vijay Chowk also fell in the rain.

The Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, also wrote to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to bring down the damaged part.

“More than a week ago, the southern minaret of the grand mosque was damaged by a dust storm and rain, and a huge piece of stone had fallen. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. But, because of this Other stones around it have also come loose,” said Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari.
