Delhi schools will reopen for classes 6 and above from tomorrow, announces government

Delhi schools reopen The Delhi government on Thursday announced that all schools in the national capital will resume physical classes for class 6 students from December 18, news agency ANI reported.

This comes as the Air Quality Management Commission (CAQM) has allowed colleges and other educational institutions in Delhi-NCR as well as schools for students of class 6 and above to reopen with immediate effect.

The Centre’s pollution control body said, “Physical classes for students up to class V may start from December 27,” news agency PTI reported.

Earlier this week, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai informed that the environment department had received an application from the education department to open schools, colleges and institutes immediately for classes 6 and above and for primary students after December 20.

These proposals were sent to the CAQM for approval as per the directions of the Supreme Court.

The commission also noted that it received a large number of representations, arguing a “forced need” to open schools and educational institutions.

Schools reopened on November 29 for all classes in Delhi, however, they were closed again from December 3 due to air pollution levels in the national capital.

The decision came after the Supreme Court pulled up the Delhi government for opening schools amid rising air pollution levels in the city.

“Why are children being forced to go to school when the government implemented work from home for adults,” the SC had asked the Delhi government, as reported by ANI.
