The official said the case relates to a conspiracy hatched by foreign intelligence agencies to extract information from defense personnel posted in India’s sensitive border areas.

A special NIA court on Thursday convicted a man in a 2017 espionage case on charges of working for his Pakistan-based handlers. Mohammad Parvez, a resident of Delhi’s Chandni Mahal, was convicted by the special court under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, a spokesman for the federal agency said.

The official said the case relates to a conspiracy hatched by foreign intelligence agencies to extract information from defense personnel posted in India’s sensitive border areas.

“The convicted accused (Parvez) was found working for operatives of Pakistan intelligence services. Parvez was joined by a man named Hamza Bhai alias Bilal when he went to Pakistan to meet his sisters.

The NIA said that Parvez was induced to collect information and take photographs related to important establishments.

“He got SIM cards issued in the name of other people and shared his WhatsApp activation codes to his Pakistani handlers for virtual activation of WhatsApp accounts. He was paid by his Pakistani handlers to carry out such tasks during his visits to Pakistan and through hawala channels in Delhi,” the spokesperson said.

The court will pronounce the sentence on March 9, the official said.
