Delhi records 9 Covid deaths in December; Highest in last 4 months: Data

According to official data, Delhi has so far reported nine COVID-19 deaths in December this year, which is the highest number of deaths due to coronavirus infection in the last four months in the national capital. Delhi recorded seven deaths from Kovid in November, four in October and five in September.

As per the data shared by the health department, the city recorded 1,313 fresh Covid cases on December 30, the highest single-day increase since May 26, while the positivity rate stood at 1.73 per cent. No fresh deaths were reported in the city on Thursday.

According to official figures, one death each was recorded on December 27 and December 28. The cumulative number of cases on Monday stood at 14,46,415. As per the latest bulletin, over 14.18 lakh patients have recovered from the infection.

According to official figures, the death toll due to coronavirus infection in Delhi stood at 25,098 till the end of November, which has increased to 25,107 till December 30. The solitary death recorded on 28 December was the ninth death due to coronavirus infection reported in December. Earlier in the last month of 2021, eight other deaths were reported due to fear of the Omicron version of Kovid.

India recorded 309 fresh omicron infections, taking the total number of such cases in the country to 1,270, according to data updated by the Union health ministry on Friday. So far, 1,270 cases have been detected in 23 states and union territories and 374 people have been cured or migrated. Maharashtra recorded the highest number of 450 cases, followed by Delhi with 320, Kerala with 109 and Gujarat with 97.

According to official data, the last time zero deaths were recorded in July was on July 29, when 51 cases were reported with a positivity rate of 0.08 per cent. In August too, the last time zero deaths were reported was on August 29 when 31 cases were registered.

According to official data, the number of daily cases had come down to 17 on September 13, with no deaths being recorded that day, while the positivity rate stood at 0.04 per cent. Delhi was hit by the second wave of the pandemic, which claimed a huge number of lives in the country in early 2021, and the issue of lack of oxygen supply in various hospitals added to the crisis.

Since April 19, there has been an increase in the number of daily cases and deaths in a single day in Delhi, which has recorded over 28,000 cases and 277 deaths on April 20; 306 people died on 22 April. According to official figures, a record 448 deaths were recorded in the city on May 3. However, there was a declining trend in the number of cases and the positivity rate was also declining since June, though the death toll continued to emerge in the subsequent months.

However, in the last one week, the cases of corona virus have increased in a big way. On December 18, the city had reported 86 cases with a positivity rate of 0.13 per cent. The daily count of cases crossed the 1,000 mark after a gap of seven months. The bulletin said that as on May 28, the city had registered 1,141 cases, taking a total of 75,953 tests – 68,590 RT-PCR tests and 7,363 rapid antigen tests – conducted. The number of people under home isolation stood at 1,560 on Thursday, compared to 1,068 a day earlier, and the number of containment zones in the city was 645, a significant jump from 502 on Wednesday, the bulletin said.
