The Delhi Police has retrieved the body of a person from a waterlogged railway underpass in Delhi, taking the death toll in the city’s storm and heavy rains on Monday to three. According to the information, the man had drowned in a submerged underpass at Pul Prahladpur in south-east Delhi.

Hundreds of trees were uprooted, road and air traffic disrupted and vehicles and buildings, including the iconic Jama Masjid, were uprooted in the national capital on Monday evening with winds gusting up to 100 kmph and heavy rain.

Commenting on the development, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Isha Pandey said on Tuesday, “Around 10:22 pm on Monday, a person was reported drowning in a waterlogged railway underpass at Pul Prahladpur police station.”

After searching the underpass for half an hour, divers of the rescue team pulled out the body of a man aged about 45-50 years. A tattoo written “Kiran I love you” was found on the right hand of the deceased, he said.

The DCP said that efforts are on to further identify him.

Barricades were put up near the railway underpass to restrict the movement of people or vehicles, police said, adding that the body has been kept at the AIIMS morgue for post-mortem.

Delhi witnessed storm of ‘severe’ intensity on Monday

Monday’s storm was the first storm of “severe” intensity in Delhi since 2018.

Delhi recorded 17.8 mm of rain till 5.30 pm, and thunderstorms saw a sharp drop in temperature at the Safdarjung observatory – from 40 degrees Celsius at 4:20 pm to 25 degrees Celsius at 5:40 pm.

Kailash, a 50-year-old man in central Delhi’s Jama Masjid area, died when a part of the balcony of his neighbor’s house collapsed during strong winds while he was standing outside his residence.

In north Delhi’s Angoori Bagh area, a 65-year-old homeless man, identified as Basir Baba, died after falling on a peepal tree, police said.
