DDCA have been very proactive during the off-season and Delhi Premier League will benefit the cricketers who were largely dependent on club cricket during this period.

Delhi is likely to get its own premier league as the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) has forwarded a request to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for holding a state T20 tournament for both men and women. The proposal of hosting the league was passed at the state association’s recent Apex Council meeting.

“DDCA has sent the request to BCCI to conduct the Delhi Premier League. We will go ahead once the board (BCCI) approves it,” said DDCA Joint Secretary Rajan Manchanda while talking to News18 CricketNext.

Delhi’s club cricket culture has been very robust but having a proper league will help unearth more talent from the state. President Rohan Jaitley has been pushing for multiple cricketing reforms in the state during the off-season. There are high-performance camps underway for both men’s and women’s players, and the Delhi senior team is also participating in quality tournaments.

DDCA team recently topped the group stage in the All India Gold Cup tournament in Dehradun, and have qualified for the knockout stages. Delhi tied their opening game against Rajasthan and went on to win their next two games against Delhi Challengers and Bihar Cricket Association.

Request to organise women’s tournament

DDCA has also made the request to start the women’s tournament alongside the men’s competition which will be a big boost to the women’s game.

“The request also includes the permission to start the women’s league. Most likely there would be eight & six teams and apart from this we will also have the auctions,” Manchanda said.

While DDCA has put forward a request for the women’s competition, CAB had announced the start of the Bengal Pro T20 tournament which will have a men’s event and a women’s event. The tournaments will be held in June this year.

Elsewhere, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) has also been planning a women’s tournament but it’s unlikely to be held this year.

A number of states like Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Baroda, Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat, UP and Punjab have their own leagues. Bengal became the latest member to join the list.
