Delhi Police registers FIR after Nupur Sharma alleges death threats over her controversial remarks

Delhi Police has registered an FIR on the complaint of Nupur Sharma in which the suspended BJP spokesperson has alleged that she was receiving death threats after her remarks on Prophet Mohammad, officials said on Monday. A senior police officer said, “Based on the FIR, we have started investigating the matter.”

According to officials, an FIR has been registered under IPC sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, caste, place of birth, residence), 506 (criminal intimidation), 507 (criminal intimidation by anonymous communication) Has been. and 509 (Word, gesture or intent to insult the modesty of a woman) against unknown persons. On May 28, a complaint was received by Sharma in the cyber cell unit regarding death threats and hate targeted at various persons, police said. He said that on this complaint a case has been registered under the said sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

“During the course of investigation, another complaint was received by Sharma against some persons with regard to promoting enmity. After investigation of the complaint, section 153A of IPC was added in this case. Notices have been sent to Twitter Inc and its response is awaited. The investigation in the matter is on,” said the senior police officer. The BJP on Sunday suspended its national spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled its Delhi-based media chief Naveen Kumar Jindal as a controversy erupted with protests from some Muslim countries over his alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammad.

Amid protests by Muslim groups and a sharp reaction from countries such as Kuwait, Qatar and Iran, the BJP issued a statement saying it respected all religions and strongly condemned the insult of any religious personality. Sharma’s comments during a TV debate about 10 days ago and Jindal’s now deleted tweets triggered a Twitter trend calling for boycott of Indian products in some countries.

Following the action, Sharma unconditionally retracted his controversial statement, claiming that his remarks were a “reaction to the continued insult and disrespect towards our Mahadev (Lord Shiva).” The letter states that he has expressed contrary views to the party’s position on various matters, which is clearly in violation of its constitution.

“For further investigation, you are hereby suspended from the party and from your responsibilities, assignments with immediate effect,” it said.
