Delhi-Meerut RRTS: PM Modi To Launch RAPIDX Priority Section On August 15?

NCRTC Managing Director Vinay Kumar Singh recently said that India’s first rapid rail train, the Delhi-Meerut RRTS, popularly known as RapidX, will be operational in a few weeks. Only the priority section of the rapid rail transit system, which is a 17-km stretch between Sahibabad and Duhai Depot, will be made operational, while the entire Delhi-Meerut RRT, an 82-km-long network, will not be ready for operation until 2025. As per various media reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to flag off India’s first urban rapid rail. Furthermore, these reports suggest that he may choose August 15, 2023 as the date to flag off the project. As per reports, the NCRTC was seen putting up tricolor lights at the Sahibabad train station, indicating a possible opening on Independence Day 2023.

This development is a significant breakthrough in terms of high quality transit services in the country. Speaking at a workshop on Transit Oriented Development, Singh said it is for the first time in India that fast intercity commuter trains will run in the National Capital Region. The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is a joint venture of the Center with the governments of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
