Delhi MCD Set to Reconvene on Jan 24 to Elect First Sole Mayor in Decade

The second municipal house is scheduled to be held on Tuesday after the recent high-stakes civic polls in the national capital, during which the mayor and deputy mayor of Delhi will be elected.

The LG-nominated members and 10 aldermen will be the first to take oath on Tuesday as the city council resumes the mayoral election after house proceedings were derailed and an uproar over non-swearing in of previously elected councillors.

Speaking to PTI, Presiding Officer Satya Sharma expressed hope that the House will pass without any untoward incident this time.

“As per the agenda, the nominated members and aldermen will take oath first. After this other members will take oath. I don’t think you will make such an issue because it is their loss. I hope we will be able to elect the mayor tomorrow.”

The second municipal house is all set to be held on Tuesday after the recent high-stakes civic polls in the national capital, during which the mayor and deputy mayor of Delhi will be elected.

The election of the mayor and deputy mayor is to be held in the first house that is held after the municipal elections, which could not take place on January 6 as the house was adjourned following an uproar between AAP and BJP members.

BJP corporator Satya Sharma, who was made the presiding officer, said that all preparations have been done for the second house.

The first meeting of the newly elected MCD council on 6 January was adjourned without the mayor and deputy mayor, amid vehement protests from AAP councillors, who insisted on the presiding officer’s decision to swear in the first 10 aldermen.

The civic polls were held on 4 December and the counting of votes took place on 7 December.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had emerged as a clear winner in the elections, winning 134 wards and ending the BJP’s 15-year rule in the civic body.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) finished second by winning 104 wards, while the Congress won nine seats in the 250-member municipal house, which will be held on January 24 for the second time after the 2022 civic polls.

Shelly Oberoi and Ashu Thakur are AAP’s contenders for the mayoral post, with Oberoi said to have a strong claim to the post. BJP has made Rekha Gupta its candidate for this post.

The nominees for the post of deputy mayor are Aale Mohammad Iqbal and Jalaj Kumar (AAP) and Kamal Bagri (BJP). Apart from the mayor and deputy mayor, six members of the MCD’s standing committee are also scheduled to be elected during the municipal house to be held on January 24.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) came into existence in April 1958 and its mayor wielded influential power and gained a great deal of prestige until 2012 when the corporation was split into three separate civic bodies, each with its own mayor. Was.

In 2022, the Center brought in a law to integrate the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (104 wards), South Delhi Municipal Corporation (104 wards), and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (64 wards) into a single entity, though it limited the total number. Had done it. Ward at 250, down from 272 wards previously.

Thus, after the mayoral election, Delhi will get a mayor for the entire city after a gap of 10 years.

The MCD headquarters is located at the Vishal Civic Center in central Delhi.

It began its journey in 1958 from the historic 1860s Town Hall in Old Delhi and was shifted to the grand campus in April 2010.
