Delhi MCD Mayor Election: AAP, BJP councillors clash ahead of swearing-in; house adjourned without electing mayor – WATCH

New Delhi: In the first meeting of the newly elected Municipal Corporation House of Delhi, which started on Friday (January 6), there was a scuffle between the AAP and BJP councilors. Councilors of both the parties clashed with each other over the appointment of 10 aldermen by Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena.

The meeting began with the swearing-in of BJP corporator Satya Sharma as the presiding officer for the election to the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

After Sharma invited Alderman Manoj Kumar to take oath, AAP MLAs and corporators started protesting. Many people reached the Well of the House raising slogans.

BJP corporators retaliated by raising slogans against AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, while AAP members retaliated by raising slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The MCD House was adjourned ahead of the start of voting for the mayoral election amid ruckus and clashes between AAP, BJP corporators.

The AAP alleged that Saxena appointed BJP leaders as aldermen who were not experts in civic issues.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also lodged his protest over the issue in a letter to Saxena on Thursday.

The MCD House consists of 250 elected councillors. BJP’s seven Lok Sabha MPs from Delhi and three Rajya Sabha MPs from AAP and 14 MLAs nominated by the Delhi Assembly Speaker will also participate in the election for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Six members of the Standing Committee will also be elected. The Congress, which has nine corporators, has decided not to take part in the voting.

A large number of police forces are deployed at the MCD headquarters Civic Center building.
