Delhi International Airport Introduces Self Baggage Drop Facility At T3, To Reduce Waiting Time

Delhi airport operator DIAL on Monday said it has introduced Self Baggage Drop (SBD) facility at Terminal 3 which will help in reducing the waiting time for passengers at the airport. The SBD aims to streamline the baggage drop-off process, reduce waiting times for passengers by approximately 15-20 minutes, and further improve the overall airport experience. According to the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the facility can serve three passengers per minute. At present, domestic passengers will be able to use this facility, and it will be made available to international passengers after mandatory approval.

A total of 14 SBD machines including 12 automatic and two hybrid have been installed. “At present, passengers traveling by Indigo will be able to use this facility, with five other airlines including Air India, Vistara, Air France, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and British Airways allowing the use of self-baggage drop for their passengers. In the near future, DIAL said in a release.

Passengers can access the SBD facility through a two-step process. After generating their boarding pass and baggage tag at the Self Check-in Kiosk, passengers will be required to tag their check-in baggage.

At the SBD facility, they must scan their boarding pass, declare that their baggage is free of prohibited/dangerous items, and load their baggage onto the designated belt. Once the process is complete, the baggage will be automatically transferred to the sorting area and subsequently to the aircraft.

If the weight of the Check-in Baggage exceeds the limit allowed by the Airline, it will not be accepted by the Check-in Baggage Machine. The facility will have airline staff to help passengers.

“DIAL is continuously working towards maximizing the passenger experience at Delhi Airport through various digitization and automation initiatives. The Self-Baggage Drop facility is aimed at making passengers self-reliant and at the same time reducing the time taken in baggage processing There is a lot to be done..,” said Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of DIAL.

DIAL, a consortium led by GMR Airport Infrastructure Limited, operates the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in the national capital.
