Delhi: Increase in number of patients with Covid-like symptoms, say doctors

Doctors said several hospitals in Delhi are reporting an increase in the number of patients suffering from Covid-like symptoms such as fever, common cold, cough and body aches in the last two weeks. Weather could also be a factor, as rainfall and fluctuations in humidity and temperature can contribute to some health complications, he said.

Doctors at several leading government and private medical facilities said these symptoms were persistent in many patients, but they did not “go for RT-PCR test” to detect COVID-19. “We are currently not seeing a significant increase in the number of COVID cases. But, in the last two weeks there have been many patients coming for consultation with fever, common cold, cough, diarrhoea, body aches or other symptoms. Some of these One is showing symptoms while others have a mix of these symptoms,” said Dr Suranjit Chatterjee, a senior consultant at Apollo Hospitals.

“There has been an increase in the cases of such patients but not a very significant increase. Nowadays people are not opting to go for RT-PCR test despite having many COVID-like symptoms. We are not going to allow such patients to go for the test. Recommend,” he said. Delhi had registered 400 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday with a positivity rate of 2.92 per cent, while one person died due to the viral infection.

Several doctors in government hospitals also said that they are getting patients with flu-like symptoms, mostly common cold and cough. “But, most people do not want to go for a COVID test. There is a huge reluctance to do it now. Weather can also be a factor, as rain and fluctuations in humidity and temperature can contribute to some health complications. But These are mild symptoms,” said a senior doctor at the Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital (RGSSH).

RGSSH is one of the largest hospitals run by the Delhi government and was a major COVID facility at the peak of the pandemic. Dr Chatterjee of Apollo Hospital said that most of the patients who showed such symptoms were cured in three to five days. He said, “For body aches or back pain, we prescribe paracetamol, and treatment is largely symptomatic. Only if symptoms last for more than five days do we recommend antibiotics, but for each patient. Treatment may vary anyway,” he said.
