In July 2021, Delhi’s peak electricity demand was higher than the July 2020 peak power demand, and also higher than in July 2019 by 70% (21 days) and 37% (11 days), respectively. On July 2, Delhi’s highest power demand this season stood at 7,323 MW, making 2021 only the third year in Delhi’s power history when peak power demand crossed the 7,000 MW mark. In 2018, peak power demand crossed the 7,000 MW mark for the first time, which stood at 7,016 MW. In 2019, it reached 7,409 MW. However, in 2020, Delhi’s season’s highest power demand was only 6314 MW.
In August 2021, Delhi’s peak electricity demand exceeded the August 2020 peak power demand by 70% (21 days) and 40% (12 days), respectively, as compared to August 2019. Sources said that the peak power demand of August 2021 was also the highest as compared to the peak power demand recorded in the whole of August 2020 and 2019. In September 2021, when Delhi received record rains, the peak power demand was 5,548 MW (September 7) as compared to 6,231 MW in 2020 and 6,626 MW in 2019. A spokesperson of the BSES discom said that it is fully prepared and sourcing enough power to meet not only the power demand of domestic consumers, but also essential services like hospitals, labs, quarantine centres, vaccination centres, etc. power supply without compromising on the safety of its employees.
“Apart from a robust distribution network and accurate load-forecasting, BSES discoms have put in place appropriate arrangements, including long-term PPAs and banking, to meet the power demands of the consumers of Delhi,” he added.
