The Delhi Airport Customs on Monday seized gold worth Rs 7.5 crore from two Kenyans at the international airport. He said that in one of the biggest seizures in recent days, the accused were apprehended after arriving from Nairobi via Addis Ababa on Monday morning and 19 weighing 15.57 kg collectively were hidden in specially made pockets as a result of the search. Gold bars were recovered. ,

The duty value of the seized gold is around Rs 7.5 crore, an official said. One of the passengers has admitted to having visited India four to five times earlier and carrying gold on every occasion, he said, adding that the second accused has come for the first time.

Customs officials at the Indira Gandhi International Airport said Dubai is generally the preferred destination for smugglers to fetch gold. “It is a new route. The involvement of Kenyan nationals in gold smuggling is also not very common,” said a senior official.

The officer said that he has not been arrested yet as the investigation is on.
