Delhi Court grants bail to Sharjeel Imam in 2019 Jamia violence case

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Thursday granted bail to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Sharjeel Imam in a case related to the alleged violence at Jamia Millia Islamia University in December 2019.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Dinesh Kumar accepted them on bail on a surety of Rs 25,000 along with a surety of like amount.

“Having regard to the nature of the offense and the fact that he was not arrested during the course of the investigation, [bail] The application is allowed,” the judge ordered.

In December 2019, there was an incident of violence in the university over the students’ protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

The FIR under which he is an accused includes offenses such as rioting, conspiracy, attempt to murder, voluntarily obstructing a public servant in the discharge of public functions and assault under the Indian Penal Code.

Imam, however, will remain in jail as he is an accused in three other cases related to the violence in Delhi.

In October, the court had denied Imam’s bail for allegedly making provocative speeches and inciting violence during the CAA-NRC protests in 2019, holding that free speech was not to be exercised at the cost of communal peace and harmony. can be done.

In addition to this case, Imam is also accused of being the “mastermind” of the February 2020 riots, in which 53 people were killed and over 700 were injured. A case has been registered against him under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

He was also arrested in 2019 under UAPA and sedition for his alleged speeches at two universities where he allegedly threatened to cut off Assam and the rest of the Northeast from India.
