The Aam Aadmi Party had won the MCD elections held in December last year. It ended the 15 years old rule of BJP in MCD. AAP won 134 out of 250 wards, while BJP got 104.

The BJP on Tuesday decided to field Shikha Rai and Soni Pandey in the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, despite not having sufficient numbers in the House.

According to a Delhi BJP statement, Rai and Pandey will file their nomination papers later on Tuesday.

Tuesday is the last date for filing nominations and polling will be held on April 26.

Shikha Rai is a councilor from Greater Kailash-1 ward, while Soni Pandey represents northeast Delhi’s Sonia Vihar ward in the civic body.

Earlier, a top Delhi BJP leader had claimed that it is unlikely to contest the polls as there is a ‘clear mandate’ in favor of the Aam Aadmi Party.

The one-year term of the mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi begins in April. The post has five single-year terms on a rotation basis, with the first year reserved for women, the second for the open category, the third for the reserved category and the remaining two again for the open category.

The BJP contested the election for mayor of the integrated MCD Municipal Corporation of Delhi in February, despite not having the required number of votes to emerge victorious. Oberoi defeated BJP corporator Rekha Gupta by 34 votes in the elections held in February.

Iqbal also defeated his BJP rival.
