During the meeting, it was discussed that the Right to Education Act currently provides free and compulsory education to all children in the age group of six to 14 years, but the benefits are provided only up to class 8, it said in a statement. Having said.

“This has left many EWS (Economically Weaker Section)/DG (Disadvantaged Group) students in Delhi struggling to pay fees from class 8 onwards and some are even at risk of dropping out…

“The Committee on Welfare of Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes thus recommends that the Education Department of Delhi extend the benefit of free education to all Economically Weaker Sections (EWS/DG) students studying in private schools up to class 12 ”

It is also stated that some private schools, which have obtained land from government agencies, already provide free education up to class 12 to children belonging to economically weaker sections/disadvantaged groups.

The committee stressed that it is necessary to provide continuous access to education to all children regardless of their socio-economic background.

“Extending the benefit of free education to all EWS/DG students up to class 12 will ensure that they get a complete education and get an opportunity to pursue higher studies and have better career prospects,” the committee said.

It also acknowledged that this may require additional resources and money, but recognized that the long-term benefits to society as a whole make it a necessary investment.
