Deep sleep after 3 years: Gang rape survivor’s friend | Ludhiana News – Times of India

Ludhiana: “I have not slept properly for 1,114 nights in these three years. I had a deep sleep on Monday night itself after all the six accused were convicted. I didn’t have the strength to go South City Road since the incident. Despite the death threats, I did not give up. Now, we are hopeful that the culprits will get death sentence or at least life imprisonment. The court will pronounce the quantum of sentence on March 4.
On 9 February 2019, the culprits gang-raped a 20-year-old girl and her friend by taking hostage.
He said, “It took me at least six months to stabilize, even to talk about the incident. I was 19 years old when this incident happened. All those scene-accused broke my car window panes to stop us, thrashed my friend, thrashed me, tried to extort money from us- refused to fade. I haven’t been able to sleep well since day one. I went into depression. People had different perceptions about the incident: some blamed us for going there at night, some thought we were doing something wrong, and some taunted and let us down. But I knew we were not wrong and stood by our statement in the court despite the offer of crores of rupees and death threats. In all the six accused there were six lawyers and six junior lawyers who used to interrogate a 19-year-old boy from me. I’m glad I didn’t give up.”
“Initially the system harassed us for filing complaints late. But when the police came to know that we were the victims, they stepped up efforts to ensure justice. I cannot thank Ludhiana Rural SSP Varinder enough Singh Brar and investigating officer DSP Harkamal Kaur, who went out of their way to help us. When the main accused got bail from the High Court, it was disappointing not only for us but also for the police. But finally we have got justice.”
After the court convicted the six convicts on Monday, the main accused threatened them. “He said ‘You are my life’ khraab krti‘Main Tenu Dekh Lauga’ (You ruined my life, I’ll teach you a lesson). I know I’m not safe because they can harm me, but I don’t want police protection. I have applied for arms license, which is pending with Ludhiana Police Commissioner. I hope to get it soon for my own safety.
