Decision to contest BMC elections alone or in alliance will be taken at local level: HK Patil

Maharashtra’s All India Congress Committee in-charge HK Patil on Friday said any decision on whether to contest the 2022 BMC elections in alliance or independently would be taken at the local level. Patil’s statement comes after Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole’s repeated remarks that his party will go it alone in all future elections.

The Congress is currently in alliance with Shiv Sena and NCP and is part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. When asked whether the Congress would contest the BMC polls separately or in alliance, Patil said, the decision to contest the polls will be taken by the Shiv Sena or separately at the local level. All such decisions will be taken at the local level in other parts of the state as well.

He was talking to reporters after the Mumbai Congress meeting. Municipal elections are due in early 2022 in several major cities of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the largest civic body in India, is currently governed by the Shiv Sena.
