Death toll from floods in northern Turkey rises to 62. Hui

Floods in towns in the Turkish Black Sea region have killed 62 people and search and rescue efforts are underway, officials said on Sunday.

The floods brought chaos to the northern provinces, just as officials were declaring that wildfires had been brought under control after raging in southern coastal areas for two weeks.

The Directorate of Disaster and Emergency Management (AFAD) said 52 people died in the floods in Kastamonu province, nine in Sinop and one in Bartin.

Drone footage from Reuters shows heavy damage in the city of Bozkert in Kastamonu province. Emergency personnel were searching the collapsed buildings.

The torrent of water threw dozens of cars and rubble on roads, destroyed buildings and bridges, closed roads and cut power to hundreds of villages.

AFAD said more than 2,000 people were evacuated from the affected areas, some of whom were evacuated with the help of helicopters and boats.
