Darjeeling had 1,542 active cases on Thursday, next only to the Covid-19 epicenter Answer 24 Pargana which had 1,801 active cases, the highest among all districts. In Kolkata it has come down to 1,217.
“The reduction in Kolkata has been sharp, at around 95% compared to some districts, including Darjeeling, where the reduction in positive cases has been slow, hovering between 50% and 75%. This shows that these places are still not out of danger.” IPGMER Surgery Professor Diptendra Sarkar.
The highest single-day spike in Darjeeling was 740 cases on May 21 as against Kolkata’s highest of 3,955 cases, which was reported on May 14. On Thursday, 87 new cases were reported in the city, while Darjeeling reported 88 cases.
“We are in the receding phase of the second wave of the COVID pandemic. But we must also remember that the daily case load is not decreasing at the same rate in every district of Bengal due to several factors like population density, transport restrictions, testing strategy, behavior of people etc,” said public health expert of Swasthya Bhavan Anirban Dalui said.
Some hill stations of Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal in North India are already buzzing with tourists after being unlocked. After further relaxation in the rules in the state, Darjeeling may soon see a similar situation.
The government said temporary herd immunity, higher number of tests and better vaccine coverage could be some of the reasons for the sharp case load drop in Kolkata.
“Now if people start running towards Darjeeling, it will prove to be dangerous for the hills. With a possible third wave, this is not the time to celebrate. Inter zonal movement restrictions should be imposed even until we have about 50% vaccine coverage, unless essential travel is done,” the government said.
Health experts said that the vaccination certificate and RT-PCR Negative reports may also help the Hills to control another surge. “Control and unlocking should be done on the basis of several factors especially daily case load, test positivity rate and transmission. There should be a ban on tourist places for now,” Dalui said.
Darjeeling CMOH Proloy Acharya said, “From awareness, testing to vaccination, we are making all efforts to bring down the numbers further.”
