danger averted

New Delhi: Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said on Friday that experts had predicted that the national capital would report one lakh daily Covid-19 infections, but that threat was averted.

Jain said that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has written to Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal asking him to relax the curfew imposed in Delhi over the weekend.

“We will take a decision on lifting further restrictions within three to four days,” he said.

Jain said Delhi is expected to register 10,500 Covid-19 cases with a positivity rate of 17 to 18 per cent.

“Out of 43 deaths recorded on Thursday, Covid-19 was the primary cause in only three,” he said.

Jain had said earlier on Thursday that the third wave of Covid-19 in Delhi was over, but warned that they were still in the “danger zone” despite the decline.

“The third wave of Covid-19 seems to have gone past Delhi after a record increase of 28K cases, 30% positivity rate,” Jain said.

“The Covid wave peak in Delhi may have gone, but we still cannot say that we are out of the danger zone. We need to see the trends,” he said.

Chief Arvind Kejriwal had earlier sent a recommendation to the Lieutenant Governor to end the weekend curfew in Delhi.

Kejriwal had also asked in the proposal to remove the odd-even system in markets and allow private offices to function at 50 per cent capacity.

Earlier on Thursday, Delhi reported 12,306 fresh Covid-19 cases and 43 more deaths, while the positivity rate jumped to 21.48 per cent as per the data shared by the city’s health department.

This is the highest number of deaths in a single day since June 10, 2021, when 44 deaths were recorded.

So far 396 people have succumbed to the coronavirus in the national capital in January.

Delhi had earlier reported 13,785 Covid-19 cases on Wednesday and the positive rate of 35 deaths stood at 23.86 per cent.
