Cyclonic storm hits Meghalaya: More than 1000 houses in 47 villages affected, Meteorological Department issues heavy rain warning

The cyclonic storm that hit Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya on Thursday has wreaked havoc. So far this storm has damaged more than 1000 houses in 47 villages. Many people have become homeless. The situation is not coming under control due to incessant rains.

According to the information, after the heavy rain in Meghalaya for the last 3 days, the power supply has also been disrupted after the storm that came with strong winds. However, so far no casualty has been reported in this storm. Along with this, rain is also continuing in some areas of West Garo Hills, South West Khasi Hills and East Jaintia districts.

At the same time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in touch with Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma, and is constantly taking updates from the officials. He has assured the state of all possible help from the Centre. Several government properties and a school, including a BDO office and a veterinary hospital, were damaged in the storm. The District Deputy Commissioner has called an emergency meeting to take stock of the situation.

Forecast of heavy rain in the Northeast for the next 5 days

IMD has predicted heavy rains in the northeast and south of the country.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rain and thundershowers in West Bengal including the northeastern states of the country for the next 5 days. This is due to the influence of strong south-westerly winds from the Bay of Bengal to the northeastern states at the lower troposphere level and due to the pressure at the lower troposphere levels, a cyclonic storm is likely to make landfall over West Assam and neighboring states. With the change in weather in the south of the country, there is a possibility of heavy rain in the next 72 hours.

The department has also issued a warning regarding this. Also, light to moderate rain will occur at many places in Arunachal Pradesh. Light to moderate rain and thundershowers may occur at a few places over other northeastern states of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura subdivisions.
